Why and how to prepare your cloth nappy inserts. Why is it important? What happens if you don't?
How to prepare or 'prep' your cloth nappy inserts before you use your cloth nappies for the first time is something that gets asked a lot. Should you prep them, why is it important and how should you do it? ⚡Products shown/mentioned -https://www.peanutandpoppet.com/collections/wipes/products/muslinz-white-bamboo-cotton-terry-wipes-12-pack -https://www.peanutandpoppet.com/collections/terries-and-flats/products/muslinz-bamboo-cotton-terry-squares-60x60cm-unbleached-single 🌿 Where else to find us: -Website: https://www.peanutandpoppet.com -Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/peanutandpoppet -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/peanutandpoppet -Facebook community group for friendly chat and advice: https://www.facebook.com/groups/305078163877836/ For personalised cloth nappy help and advice: firstname.lastname@example.org In this video you can see exactly why it's important to prep your inserts. Prepping simply means washing your inserts/cloth nappies. It's simple to do, there's no complicated steps but it's definitely beneficial. This is mainly needed for natural materials such as bamboo and hemp. For pure cotton or microfiber you should find that one wash to remove any manufacturing residue is plenty. How to prep your cloth nappies: To get your bamboo or hemp inserts up to full absorbency you will need to wash them 6-10 times depending on the material. There is no need to dry between washes so you can just pop them in with your next few nappy washes or unused inserts could go in with a regular wash (as long as you aren't using fabric softener, ideally you'll be using a powder detergent). Why prewash your inserts to prepare them: Hemp and bamboo both contain oils that repel liquid (in this case it would be wee/urine and that's not what we want!) that you will want to remove before use, you'll see in this video exactly what happens when these oils aren't being removed. To sum it up the liquid rolls off the material before it's had a chance to absorb and may cause you leaks. In addition to this, the more you wash your inserts, the more absorbent they become because the agitation during washing allows the fibers to hold more liquid. These things are important to know because you may think that a nappy isn't very absorbent or isn't working for you when it can be as simple as needing to wash the inserts more. Should you prep your nappies? In short, yes, but how many washes you do is up to you. Commonly, cloth users wash once and change baby more frequently or add an extra booster to the nappy to allow for the reduced absorbency. This video will help you to understand the importance of prepping your inserts and give the knowledge to understand what happens when they aren't fully prepped so that you can decide for yourself what the best method for you is.
